Highlands Chapter Red Cross Disaster Services staff and volunteers provide relief to victims of all types of calamities, from house fires to hurricanes.

For fire victims, the Red Cross provides emergency needs: food, clothing, and shelter.  A Disaster Action Team (DAT) member goes to the scene of the fire to assess the damage and the disaster-caused needs.  The DAT member then issues vouchers so the family can purchase needed emergency supplies.

When a larger disaster strikes, the Red Cross provides for the emergency needs of the families, the mass care needs of the community at large, and then meets with each affected family to determine if any additional help is needed.

The Highlands Chapter is part of the county, state, and federal Disaster Response Plans.  Our primary responsibilities include providing food, shelter, health and mental health care.  These various forms of care could be initiated before, during, or immediately after a disaster.

Should a hurricane be expected, monitor local media for weather and evacuation updates.  If the chapter opens shelters the location will be announced immediately on the local broadcast media.
